Wow..its been a while since I have blogged. I guess I have been busy..the year is winding down and I only have 3 weeks left of school.
The weather has gotten increasingly hot and this makes everything slow....like thoughts in my brain!
I did go to a rare event in Khartoum last weekend...a Hip Hop concert. It was in collaboration with the French and German cultural groups. There were french and German artist invited to lead workshops with local Sudanese artist and their work culminated in a concert. The concert was outside infront of the National Museum..which I have yet to visit. It was cool because the performances were in many languages..French, Arabic, English and German.
And even more exciting was the cipher of folks dancing and rocking out when the performances were happening. In the beginning folks were just stitting in neat rows in chairs in front the stages. Slowly people got up and went to the back which was open and began to dance. Soon more than 1/2 the audience was in the back dancing and cheering...waving arms...clapping..singing along. Then finally at the end of the night this crowd moved up to the front of the stage...like a true concert..and danced along.
It felt so great to be there hearing music and moving to the beats.
There was only one woman MC. She was really good. Her flow was her own style and she rhymed in Arabic and English. It was interesting hearing the rhymes in English because you could hear the influence of east and west coast rappers in the cadence of the artist. Some sounded like Snoop or Tupac or Ice Cube. You could tell by the way that would say their words what artist they listened to. One group was more like a singing boy band..there were for of them and they had dance moves and everything!
